What is Chi? And
how does it relate to massage?
Chi means ‘life
force’ or ‘vital energy’. This concept has been around for thousands
of years in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Along with the blood it is
one of the two main philosophical concepts of Chinese Medicine.
Oriental medicine has always had the fundamental idea that a smooth
flow of chi is one of the main ways through which health imbalances are
prevented. When there is a blockage then muscle tension will develop in
that area, nerve impulses won’t work as effectively and blood won’t
circulate as well, leading not only to muscle tension but to ill health
too.
Therefore, the
fundamental basis of Chi massage is to open up the flow of chi in the
body by removing blockages and stagnation from the meridians and
organs. Each meridian relates to an organ within the body, and each
organ relates to an emotion. For example the kidneys store fear.
Whenever we feel fear of any kind the kidneys produce adrenaline and we
begin to lose our chi. If we are in constant fear the body produces so
much adrenaline that our muscles become tight, we have ‘knots’ in our
stomach, & we feel stressed. Our wellbeing is compromised and the
energy and emotions become trapped within our organs and cells. If that
organ happens to be the liver, which holds repressed anger, the body
eventually can hold no more and someone is on the receiving end of an
angry outburst.
When obstructed
the internal organs store unhealthy energies that can create all kinds
of sickness as the body starts the pendulum swing between something
being chronic and acute. As such intensity cannot be sustained and long
after the rational self has ‘dealt with’ the emotional condition the
body finds itself breaking down.
When chi starts
to move it balances and flushes the circulatory system and lymphatic
systems detoxifying the organs, in practice balancing the ‘yin & yang’
within the body. This means having the internal and external body
living in harmony with one another. However, opening up the flow of chi
may achieve a whole lot more then just loosening the muscles. As the chi
moves so old stored emotions can give rise to being expressed. After
the emotional release, a person feels more peaceful and lighter and
feels like a burden has lifted off them. Hence, a chi massage results
in the whole body and mind benefiting.
